Objective of the course: This is an introductory course which aims at establishing basic terminology of building technology and science for first-year students of architecture and city planning. Students will acquire familiarity with visual, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional communication tools and acquire ability to utilise these communication tools in analysis of building components. In this context, the importance of construction drawing and presentation techniques in the process of building design will be elucidated. Besides these objectives, the course intends to introduce the concepts of building, construction, and structural systems to students’ general comprehension of the built environment.

Course Contents: The framework of the course is set on provision of skills and knowledge of architectural drawing techniques by means of learning architectural language by hand-drawing. In the first five weeks, the course will focus on basic construction drawing and presentation techniques including top view, plan, elevation, section, three dimensional drawings such as axonometric, isometric and oblique perspectives. In the subsequent nine weeks, it will concentrate more on subjects related to building construction in architecture such as building loads and basic stresses (compression, tension, bending, buckling, and shear), building regulations in Turkey and implications for site planning, and particular building components, i.e. foundations and walls.
