Objective of the course: The student will acquire fundamental concepts in critical thinking and academic writing concentrating on developing argumentative claims that are supported by full and convincing evidence and presented in a clean, clear style. He/she will acquire competence in identifying convergent points and disparities between arguments/positions; furthermore, writing argumentative essays.

Course Contents:
This course provides an introduction to argument, analysis, and research, using as readings a broad spectrum of modern nonfictional prose. Writing assignments are based on a series of thematic units relating to educational, intellectual, political, technical and social issues. Intensive instruction and practice in writing argumentative essays and in developing the skills necessary for research-based writing in the academic disciplines. Argumentative essay outline and types. Introduction and conclusion techniques. Term projects and summary writing.
